MEDICAL CODING

                 Medical Coding is the process of assigning standard codes to medical diagnoses and procedures related to the treatment of patients in order to facilitate the collection and analysis of healthcare data.

                  Medical coders use a set of codes for coding purpose. These codes includes ICD, CPT and HCPCS. ICD codes are set of diagnosis codes, which contains signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. For instance ICD code, G12.9 denotes Spinal Muscular Atrophy. 

                     Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, causing muscle weakness and wasting. It is a leading genetic cause of death in infants. Symptoms of SMA include difficulty in breathing, swallowing and moving, as well as poor muscle tone, muscle wasting, weak reflexes, stiff joints and scoliosis. In severe cases, the affected person may not be able to move or even breathe without help. Treatment for SMA includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthopedic surgery, respiratory support, and medicines to help manage symptoms. There is currently no cure for SMA, but research is ongoing.
