MEDICAL CODING
Medical Coding is the process of assigning standard codes to medical diagnoses and procedures related to the treatment of patients in order to facilitate the collection and analysis of healthcare data.
Medical coders use the alphanumeric codes from various coding systems, including the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, to assign codes to diagnoses and procedures.
International Classification of Diseases or ICD codes are set of diagnostic codes by World Health Organisation (WHO) . These codes are diagnostic codes. They contains diagnosis, signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. For instance ICD code, K30 denotes Functional Dyspepsia.
Functional dyspepsia is a chronic disorder that causes recurrent bouts of indigestion. It is also referred to as non-ulcer dyspepsia or functional gastrointestinal disorder.
Common symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:
• Abdominal pain or discomfort
• Bloating
• Nausea
• Belching
• Early fullness after eating
• Loss of appetite
• Burning or gnawing sensation in the stomach
• Heartburn
• Acid reflux or regurgitation
The exact cause of functional dyspepsia is unknown, but it is thought to be related to abnormal gut motility, abnormal sensitivity or perception in the digestive tract, or an imbalance of hormones or neurotransmitters in the digestive system. Treatment of functional dyspepsia may include lifestyle changes such as eating smaller meals, avoiding fatty or spicy foods, and avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol. Medications such as proton pump inhibitors, H2 receptor antagonists, and antacids may also be used to help reduce symptoms.
