MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of translating clinical operations including diagnosis, required tools, doctor's notes, and lab results into globally recognised alphanumeric codes. These standardised codes are used by insurance companies and healthcare providers for billing and record-keeping. International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedure Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System are the three different types of codes (HCPCS).
A medical coder is someone who translates these medical procedures into codes. These codes are important because it provides a common language for recording and monitoring diseases. This allows the worlds to compare and share data in a consistent and standard way between hospitals, regions and countries and over periods of time.
There are skills required for a medical coder:
1. Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
