                             Medical Coding is the conversion of healthcare processes like diagnosis, symptoms and signs, prescription, equipment used or any other abnormal findings on a patient by a healthcare professional or a doctor into universally accepted alphanumeric codes. These codes are later billed to insurance companies to claim insurance for payment purposes. The codes should be accurate, f not the insurance claim will not be accepted.

                            The coders use universally accepted codes for the coding purposes , which includes, International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedural Coding Systems (HCPCS),.

                              International Classification of diseases or ICD Codes are managed and published by World Health Organisation (WHO) . These codes contains disease names, signs and symptoms, or any other abnormal findings . For instance ICD code for hydrocephalus is G91.9.

                                  Hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in the cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. The excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts pressure on the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid normally flows through the ventricles and bathes the brain and spinal column. But the pressure of too much cerebrospinal fluid associated with hydrocephalus can damage brain tissues and cause a range of brain function problems.


Symptoms in infants includes:

  • An usually large head 
  • An rapid increase in the size of the head
  •  A bulging or tense soft spot on the top of the head.
                                Adults and older children experience headache, impaired vision , cognitive difficulties, loss of coordination and incontinence.  Treatment is often a tube inserted surgically into a ventricle to drain excess fluid.
